Burns
A minor (1st-degree) burn affects only the outermost layer of skin and shows up as redness, warmth and pain without blistering. The skin usually heals on its own within a week, but proper first aid in the first minutes (cool running water, not ice) makes a real difference.
Plants and herbs that help
- Honey, Clinically documented to speed healing of superficial burns, lower infection risk and reduce scarring.
- Aloe vera, The FDA has approved aloe vera ointment as an over-the-counter remedy for skin burns.
- Lavender, Traditionally used in a homemade salve for its pain-soothing effect.

Honey dressing
Honey on wounds is not old superstition, it is hospital equipment. Medical-grade honey is used in hospitals today for wounds that will not heal, and it is the same mechanism you use here. The honey draws fluid out of bacteria so they cannot multiply, and keeps the wound moist at the same time, which is the single factor that matters most for how well a burn heals. But the order is everything. Cool first, twenty minutes under lukewarm water. The honey comes afterwards, never before.

Salve
Aloe vera gel, straight from the leaf
Aloe vera is the only plant in the apothecary you can use without preparing anything. You cut off a leaf, and the medicine is already there. The gel is almost pure water, but that water holds compounds that cool, calm inflammation and keep the wound moist while the skin rebuilds itself. That is why it beats most creams on a light burn. One thing first, and it matters more than the gel itself: cool the burn under lukewarm water for twenty minutes before you do anything else.

Salve
Lavender-honey beeswax salve
This salve is for the phase after. Not for the fresh burn, which needs cooling and quiet, but for the days that follow, when the skin has begun to heal and feels tight and itchy. Honey keeps the area moist and clean, beeswax lays a protective layer, and lavender eases the itch. Three things each used on skin for centuries, and they work well together. It smells the way you hope it does.

Seek medical care for burns larger than a palm, 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns, or burns on the face, joints or genitals.
