Garlic-lemon-honey tonic

15 minutesEasyMakes: about 500 ml, enough for a week

There is one step in this recipe that looks like a mistake, and it is the whole secret: you crush the garlic and let it sit for ten minutes before doing anything else.

Allicin, the active compound, does not exist in a whole clove. It only forms when the cell walls break and two substances meet, and that process takes time. Use the garlic immediately and you get the flavour without the effect.

Ten minutes. Set a timer.

The rest is simple: lemon, honey and water, overnight in the fridge, and a glass in the morning.

Ingredients

  • 4-5 garlic cloves, crushed
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • Water, about 500 ml

Equipment

  • Garlic press or the flat of a knife
  • Jar with lid
  • Strainer
  • A straw

Method

  1. 1

Crush 4-5 cloves of garlic, place in a jar with the juice of 2 lemons and 2 tbsp honey, top up with water.

  2. 2

Steep in the fridge overnight, strain, and take 1 tbsp in the morning on an empty stomach.

Dosage

1 tbsp in the morning on an empty stomach.

Rinse your mouth with water afterwards and wait half an hour before brushing. Citric acid softens the enamel.

Give it at least 4 weeks, and measure your blood pressure along the way.

Shelf life

5-7 days refrigerated in a sealed jar. If it starts to bubble or smell fermented, discard it.

Safety

Garlic is blood-thinning. If you take anticoagulants, or face surgery within two weeks, ask your doctor. Four or five cloves daily is a medicinal amount, not a culinary one.

Garlic lowers blood pressure. If you already take blood pressure medication, the two together can lower it too far. Speak with your doctor, and measure.

Raw garlic on an empty stomach can sting, cause heartburn or loose stools. Start with a teaspoon, and take it with food if your stomach protests.

Citric acid wears at tooth enamel. Use a straw, rinse afterwards, and do not brush for half an hour.

If you have reflux or ulcers, both garlic and lemon can make them worse.

Honey must not be given to children under 1 year.

You will smell of garlic. That is not a side effect, it is allicin leaving the body through the lungs, and no amount of tooth brushing removes it.

High blood pressure must be measured and followed by a doctor. This tonic is a supplement, not a replacement, and you must never stop your medication on your own.

How the herbs work

Garlic contains alliin and the enzyme alliinase, kept apart inside the cells. Crush the clove and they meet, and allicin forms. Allicin is what works, and that is why the ten minutes of rest are decisive: the reaction needs time before acid and heat stop it.

Allicin widens the blood vessels and inhibits platelet clumping. Several controlled trials show a mild but measurable fall in blood pressure with daily intake over weeks.

Lemon contributes vitamin C, and the honey makes the mixture drinkable. There is little evidence that honey itself lowers blood pressure, but it makes you remember to take the tonic tomorrow. That counts.
