Tea
Saffron tea
Saffron is the world''s most expensive spice, and there is a reason: every thread is a stigma picked by hand from a crocus, and it takes around one hundred and fifty thousand flowers to make a kilo.
It sounds like luxury, but you need three threads. A gram lasts for months.
And the unusual part is that the research actually supports it. Several controlled trials have compared saffron directly with antidepressant medication in mild to moderate low mood and found a comparable effect. That is a very strong claim for a spice, and it holds up better than most.
The tea turns golden yellow and tastes of honey and hay.
Ingredients
- 3-4 saffron threads
- 250 ml hot water, not boiling
Equipment
- Cup
- Airtight, dark jar for storage
Method
- 1
Place 3-4 threads of saffron in a cup of warm water, steep 10 minutes, drink daily.
Dosage
One cup daily.
Use hot, not boiling water, and let the threads steep for 10 minutes. Boiling water destroys some of the aroma.
Give it at least 4-6 weeks before judging. Saffron works gradually, not from one day to the next.
Shelf life
Saffron threads keep 2-3 years in a dark, airtight jar. Light and air are what ruin them.
Safety
Stick to the three or four threads. Saffron is safe in culinary amounts, but above one and a half grams daily it becomes toxic, and five grams can be life-threatening. It is hard to reach by accident, but worth knowing.
Not during pregnancy. Saffron in larger amounts can trigger contractions and has historically been used to induce abortion.
Buy whole threads, never powder. Saffron powder is the most adulterated spice in the world and is often cut with turmeric, safflower or dyes. Real saffron colours the water golden slowly, not instantly.
If you take antidepressant medication, speak with your doctor before drinking it regularly. Saffron can affect the same signalling chemicals.
It can be mildly blood-thinning. If you take anticoagulants, mention it.
And most important: a tea is not a treatment for depression. If things have been black for more than two weeks, if you lose interest in what you usually love, or if you think about not being here, speak with your doctor. Getting help is not weakness, it is the wildest thing you can do.
How the herbs work
Saffron contains crocin and safranal, which affect the brain''s serotonin and dopamine systems, the same systems antidepressant medication works in.
The effect has been studied in several randomised controlled trials in mild to moderate depression, where saffron proved comparable to standard medication and better than placebo. It is among the best-documented plants in the whole apothecary.
The threads also contain powerful antioxidants, and the golden colour in the water is crocin, the active compound itself doing the colouring.
The effect builds over weeks. One cup does nothing, but six weeks can do something.
