Everyone says you should set an intention at the new moon, but nobody tells you what to do when you sit down with the paper and realise you cannot feel what you want. You can remember what everyone else needs. You can list what still has to be done. But that one question, what do I want, comes back completely blank.
It is not because you are lazy or unambitious. It is because you have spent so many years being the antenna for everyone else's needs that your own signal has gone faint.
And if you set an intention from that place, it turns into another task. Another should. Another place where you can fail.
So let us do it differently.
A new moon intention is not a goal
A goal is something you have to reach. An intention is a direction you turn towards.
The difference matters enormously when you are empty. A goal demands energy you do not have. A direction only asks you to turn your head.
And a new moon intention never begins with something new. It begins with putting something down. You do not plant a seed on top of old weeds.
The three questions
Take a piece of paper. Not your phone. There needs to be something physical between you and this.
1. What am I tired of carrying?
Write freely. Not neatly. Everything you do because someone expects it. Everything you say yes to with a knot in your stomach. Everything you carry because nobody else picked it up and you could not stand watching it lie there.
2. What would there be room for if I put it down?
Now it gets interesting. Look at the list, and imagine half of it vanished in the night. What would come forward into that hole? Time, yes. But something else too. Something you used to be.
3. Who am I when nobody is watching?
That is your answer. Not an action plan. Just a direction you remember to turn towards.
Why doing it with your head alone does not work
Burnout does not live in your thoughts. It sits in the nervous system, in the jaw, in the shoulders, in that small permanent alarm in your stomach saying you have forgotten something.
You cannot think your way out of it. You have probably been trying for years.
But you can shake your way out of it. It sounds strange. It works.
The shaking, five minutes
Stand with bare feet on the floor or out on the grass. Feet well apart, knees slightly bent.
Start by shaking your hands. Let the shaking travel up into your arms, out into your shoulders, down into your hips. Begin to bounce lightly on your heels so the whole body shakes with you. Let your mouth hang slightly open so the jaw lets go. It is the part that has been holding on longest.
Imagine you are shaking everyone else's expectations off your skin like dust.
After five minutes: stop. One hand on your heart, one on your belly. Feel the blood moving and the warmth in your body.
You are not performing right now. You are simply alive. That is enough.
And then you burn the list
Take the paper you wrote on under question one. Crumple it up, or burn it in a fireproof bowl. Say this out loud while you do:
*"I do not owe the world perfection. I owe myself freedom".*
Out loud. Not inside your head. Your body needs to hear your own voice say it, or it does not quite count.
The three sentences you say to the mirror afterwards
Ordinary life will come and collect you again. It is very good at that. So you get three sentences to say to yourself in the morning. Look yourself in the eyes while you say them, and say them out loud.
"My worth is not measured in what I produce. I am enough, exactly when I do nothing".
"A no to someone else is a sacred yes to my own health and my own freedom".
"I was not put here to please. I was put here to live".
The more often, the better. Eventually you stop thinking about it, and that is the moment it has worked.
One last thing
Rituals, shaking and new moons are good things, and they do work. They are simply not everything. If you are somewhere where it is heavy all the time, and not only in stretches, then you also deserve a real person to talk to. One does not rule out the other. I have needed both.
The whole ritual
This is the free part. Inside the Book of Rituals lies the whole thing: the altar with its colours and crystals, the calling of the four elements, the invocation of Lilith, the full shaking dance and the herb bath you lie down in afterwards.
It goes live on Thursday the 10th, the day before the new moon.
