  • Milk thistle, Silymarin protects and supports the regeneration of liver cells.
  • Dandelion root, Stimulates bile production.
  • Artichoke, Supports bile flow and fat metabolism.
  • Nettle, Supports fluid excretion through the kidneys.

Tea

Milk thistle tea

Milk thistle is a thistle with white-marbled leaves, and legend says the white veins are Mary''s milk, spilled on the plant. The seeds are the active part, not the leaves. It is one of the few herbs where the liver is genuinely the documented target. Silymarin, the compound in the seeds, is used in emergency medicine for death cap poisoning, which is no small thing to have on your record. Crush the seeds before pouring on water. Whole seeds are hard little shells, and the contents stay locked inside.

Drink

Dandelion root decoction

The root is a different plant from the leaves, even though they sit on the same dandelion. The leaves move water. The root goes for the liver. And where leaves are steeped in boiling water, roots must be simmered. It is called a decoction, and the difference is not pedantry: the bitter compounds sit inside hard, woody tissue, and they only come out after a quarter of an hour of simmering. Dig it in September or October, when the plant has drawn its strength down into the root after summer. Spring roots are thin and mild, autumn roots thick and bitter. You want the bitter ones. It tastes of earth and burnt coffee. Some people genuinely like it.

Tea

Artichoke-nettle tea

Two bitter plants working from different directions. Artichoke gets the bile moving, so the liver gets help clearing what it has been working on. Nettle pushes from the kidney side. It tastes bitter. That is not a flaw, it is the mechanism: the bitterness is what makes the body respond. Sweetening it would take the effect away. Drink it in the morning, it moves water.
