Milk thistle tea

15 minutesEasyMakes: about 250 ml

Milk thistle is a thistle with white-marbled leaves, and legend says the white veins are Mary''s milk, spilled on the plant. The seeds are the active part, not the leaves.

It is one of the few herbs where the liver is genuinely the documented target. Silymarin, the compound in the seeds, is used in emergency medicine for death cap poisoning, which is no small thing to have on your record.

Crush the seeds before pouring on water. Whole seeds are hard little shells, and the contents stay locked inside.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp milk thistle seeds, lightly crushed
  • 250 ml boiling water

Equipment

  • Mortar or the back of a spoon
  • Strainer
  • Cup
  • Plate to cover with

Method

  1. 1

Lightly crush 1 tsp milk thistle seeds, pour 250 ml boiling water over, steep 10-15 minutes.

Dosage

1-3 cups daily, for 4-6 weeks. Then take a month off.

Steep 10-15 minutes, covered. The seeds need time.

Shelf life

Whole seeds keep 1-2 years, dark and airtight. Crush only just before use.

Safety

Milk thistle is in the daisy family. If you are allergic to mugwort, ragweed, chamomile or ox-eye daisy, try a small cup first.

It can affect how quickly the liver breaks down medication. If you take any regular medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether anything needs allowing for.

It can lower blood sugar. If you have diabetes and take medication, keep an eye out.

Some people get loose stools in the first days. Start with one cup.

Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding, it has not been studied enough.

And most important: yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent pain under the right ribs or unusual fatigue belong with a doctor immediately. Liver disease must be investigated, not self-treated.

How the herbs work

Milk thistle seeds contain silymarin, a group of compounds that protect liver cell membranes from damage while supporting the cells'' ability to regenerate.

The effect is unusually well documented for a herb. Silymarin is used in hospital treatment of death cap poisoning, given precisely to protect the liver from the mushroom''s toxin.

The tea is a mild version of that. The seeds do not give everything up to water, so a tea delivers less than a concentrated extract, but it is gentle and can be drunk over time.

The content here is general knowledge and folk herbal lore, not medical treatment. In illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding or alongside medication: always talk to your doctor first.
