How To Use Incense
Types of incense
- • Sticks (joss sticks), easy, long burn time, good for daily use
- • Cones, shorter, more intense scent, good for focused rituals
- • Resin / granules on charcoal, the most powerful, requires a fireproof charcoal disc
- • Dried herb bundles (smudge), to "sweep" the smoke through a room or around the body
How to light safely
- • Always use a fireproof bowl or holder
- • Light the flame, let it burn a few seconds, then blow it out so the incense smoulders
- • Ensure good ventilation, open a window
- • Never leave burning incense unattended
- • Keep away from children, pets and flammable materials
⚠️ Take extra care if
- • You are pregnant, some herbs (including Mugwort) are not recommended during pregnancy
- • You have asthma or are sensitive to smoke, consider an alcohol-free oil diffuser as a smoke-free alternative
Sustainability
Demand for White Sage and Palo Santo has put pressure on wild populations. Choose cultivated (not wild-harvested) sources, or use alternatives such as dried rosemary, juniper or cedar.
